The CDC noted that it has recently launched a national electronic norovirus outbreak surveillance network, called CaliciNet, and recommends the collection of stool specimens to confirm a diagnosis, characterize the norovirus strain and upload the sequence results into CaliciNet.
"Additionally, all suspected and confirmed norovirus outbreaks should be reported to CDC by state and local health departments through the National Outbreak Reporting System," the authors advise.

They are pathogenic for all age groups of the population. These viruses are very infectious; one to ten viral particles are sufficient to get sick.

Aux Etats-Unis, 20 millions de personnes contractent le norovirus annuellement et 10% d'entre eux sont suffisamment malades pour nécessiter des soins hospitaliés. 800 décès sont dus au norovirus chaque année aux USA, indique M. Jan Vinje, du CDC (Center for Disease Controls) à Atlanta.
M. Vinje précise que les chercheurs ont démontré ces troublantes découvertes concernant norovirus :
- c'est l'un des pathogènes les plus infectieux
- norovirus mute et donc de nombreuses Souches émergent tous les trois ans. Les scientifiques ne sont pas sûrs pourquoi de telles mutations apparaissent.
- une fois contaminés par une des ces nombreuses souches, les individus sont immunisés pour seulement 6 à 12 mois contre cette souche
- Jusqu'à 30% des personnes infectées sont asymptomatiques d'où la dissémination involontaire par des personnes manipulant ou préparant des aliments.
- l'excrétion virale (quand le virus se multiplie et devient transmissible) chez les patients infectés atteint un pic après quatre jours et se poursuit jusqu'à trois semaines après.
Norovirus au cours de ces cinq derniers mois a déjà été impliqué dans une douzaine d'épidémies dans les navires de croisières, ce qui ne représente au total que quatre pour cent des cas. Les établissements de soins long séjour représentent 60% des cas. Les restaurants, les rencontres entre amies, banquets, hôpitaux, camps de loisirs, avions, hôtels et écoles sont aussi bien représentés.

Investigation into non-travel associated hepatitis A case
The HPA is currently investigating three cases of hepatitis A, acquired in the UK, with symptom onset dates in October 2011. The infecting hepatitis A strain is the same as one seen in two UK acquired hepatitis A cases in 2010. This hepatitis A strain has previously been identified in outbreaks of hepatitis A in the Netherlands, France and Australia where consumption of sun dried tomatoes was considered to be the source of infection through epidemiological investigations [1,2,3].
Consumption of sun-dried tomatoes is therefore one source that is currently being investigated for the recent non-travel associated cases. Local Health Protection Units have been asked to ascertain a complete recent food history during follow up of any hepatitis A cases not directly linked to travel.
Laboratories have been asked to refer samples from cases of hepatitis A not clearly linked to travel to HPA Colindale for molecular sequencing. Investigations are ongoing to inform the public health response.

The MLVA assay for P. aeruginosa examines 16 loci. Thus, each isolate is defined by a 16-digit numeric code corresponding to the number of repeats at each VNTR.Genotyping Kit

Norovirus forårsaker smittsom gastroenteritt og er årsaken til hyppige epidemier kjent fra tidligere som ”omgangssyke”. Norovirus tilhører familien caliciviridae, og kan inndeles i fem genogrupper, hvorav 3 genogrupper kan smitte mennesker (GI, GII og GIV). Hver genogruppe kanigjen inndeles i flere genotyper. Viruset er antatt å være den vanligste årsak til ikke-bakteriell gastroenteritt i industrialiserte land.
Virusgruppen har tidligere vært kjent under mange navn, bl.a. Norwalk-liknende virus, calicivirus og "små runde strukturerte virus” (SRSV). En annen betegnelse på norovirus-enteritt er ”winter vomiting disease”. Viruset ble første gang påvist i 1972. Mennesket er eneste reservoar for viruset.
Sykdommen opptrer vanligvis som utbrudd, ofte i omgivelser der folk er i nær kontakt med hverandre, som helseinstitusjoner, barnehager, cruiseskip, militærforlegninger og hoteller. Utbrudd forekommer hyppigst om vinteren. Alle aldersgrupper kan bli rammet og sekundærtilfeller er vanlig. Utbrudd som omfatter store deler av befolkningen i et område kan forekomme ved fekal forurensning av drikkevann, og virus kan også gi utbrudd via kontaminert mat (storhusholdninger). Norovirus er en av de vanligste registrerte årsaker til vannbårne utbrudd i Norge i de senere år.

L. pneumophila is the main etiologic agent of legionellosis, a severe respiratory disease transmitted by inhalation of aqueous aerosols. L. pneumophila is an ubiquitous aquatic bacteria but also has a widespread distribution in man-made environments. The Crown Princess returned from a seven-day cruise Saturday and was docked at Port Everglades. A total of 140 passengers and 18 crew members were affected by the illness. The Ruby Princess is scheduled to dock Sunday morning. Cruise officials say another 81 passengers and nine crew members were affected on that ship.
